Everytime I take a break from the blog I take a moment to look back on past posts and realize how important it is to write here. All the details I forget when I fail to write them down are lost and that is sad. So no resolutions for future posts but certainly more of an attempt....it is the digital age and it should be easier, right?
The boys are both getting so big. When I look at Cole I can hardly believe I am the mother of a nearly six-and-three-quarter year old (as of February 6th). Cole is learning fractions this year...and as I mentioned growing up quickly. He's entered the stage that a simple 6 is not enough! First it was 6 and a half...and today he asks, "mom, when will I be 6 3/4?"! He is reading so incredible right now...level 12 benchmark in the first grade. He loves playing his Wii- Super Mario cart specifically but most of all loves hanging out with his lil bro. The companionship and brotherhood between those two constantly amazes me.
Brooksy is quickly slipping into little boy mode. He makes me laugh every day...even when i don't want to. He has the most amazing ability to change the mood from something serious into something that is giggly and fun. He is becoming so independent and yet, somehow always needing me in just the right way. He is going to be a great big brother. We had preschool orientation last week, yikes!, and I know that he is ready...so ready.

So it's been a while
First grade is going great for Cole. His teacher, Mrs. Bekenstein loves him and we like her too! She is the mom of three, so she just gets it! There is less homework and a whole lot less pressure on Cole. He is doing well there and is reading like a champ. We practice his words of the week spelling bee style. It's fun to have a little one in school. Cole lost his first tooth and also visited the ER for the first time (took a fall and resulted in 3 stiches) all in the same week. We are gearing up for the upcoming Holidays and of course, the boys are super excited!
Brooksie turned 3 last month! Wow has time flown. He is such a big boy these days. Today he refused to use a sippy cup, he wanted a big boy cup instead. How could I refuse him? He is acting so much like a big boy these days. He didn't like the idea of using the potty very much at first so we gave it a break for a week or two. When we revisited, he took on the project like a champ and has been dry ever since. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the night time string of dry diapers really does mean no more diapers. Its funny to me that there seems to be a switch inside of kids that as it changes from 2 to 3 an independence button is clicked on. Brooks no longer wants help with many of the things that he used to rely on me for. "by myself" has become his personal motto :) I'm okay with it...as long as I still get to read books to him each night and he still wants me to sing him the ABC's before bed :)

Back to school
Wow...a summer gone! Cole proudly moved on to another year of school and never looked back this morning. When asked about his day in the afternoon he said he loved it! The best part? Recess! Figures :). Mostly due to the fact that he was able to play with kids from last years class. Me? I felt like I needed to throw up all day! Can't figure out if it's because I miss him so much or I just hate change...regardless... Onward we go!

One Fab Weekend
It's been a busy summer and we're still trying to make the best of it! Last weekend we headed to J-town to take Cole and Brooks to Idlewild, an amusement park not far from there. Just days before, Cole got to go there and Hershey Park, where he rode his very first roller coasters. I hear that he said "Awesome" as he got off! This from the little boy that up till that moment was deathly afraid of most rides :) My Little Man is growing up. So anyway, we took the boys to Idlewild with Scott, Allison and Quinn. What a fun day! The rides are geared toward young kids and were even fun for the adults. We also got to visit the 9/11 Memorial in Shanksville, PA on our way home. I'm amazed that in the past 10 years we haven't made it there. It's beautiful. A totally different experience than the other 9/11 Memorials. Quiet...reflective and of course, a tear jerker.
This past weekend we started our Saturday with a trip to Hollin Farms in Delaplane, VA to pick peaches. We also picked raspberries and blackberries. It was a hot, sweaty but delicious experience. We picked some of the largest (big as grapefruits) peaches I have even seen. After our furit picking, we headed over to Mac and Margie's for a family BBQ and pool party. The boys played to their heart's content in the water and mom and dad had fun too.
On Sunday, the boys and I were baptized. This is something that has haunted me for my entire life and I feel an amazing sense of relief to finally check it off my life list. While I totally respect my parents for not choosing to baptize me as a child, it has also been a source of distress for me as an adult. I didn't want my boys to ever feel that way. We have made a church home of a local Methodist Church and I absolutely love their services. Craig is often skeptical but coming from a Catholic past, I guess I understand. This is no Catholic mass :) It is uplifting and fun and best of all I understand the scripture...most of the time.
Overall this was one of my favorite weekends we've had in a long time. Good, quality family time and not spending a lot of money....my kinda fun!

Beach Beauties
not the bathing suit kind but the more adorable type...two handsome little boys as sand rakers for Pap and Susan's wedding. My heart swells with love for them as I think back to how cute they were (and are!). Great job guys...I really do think we should hire you out!

Bittersweet Endings
Summer vacation is here!!! Best of all this means we have a first grader :) We are so proud of you, Cole Harper. To celebrate we attended Herndon Live on Friday night. This is the fourth week in a row that we have been on Friday night to watch the live music in downtown Herndon. I LOVE doing this with the boys. It gives us a chance to slow down and spend some time with them. We also rewarded Cole with a snowcone machine, which has proven to be a lot of fun.
We're now into the swing of planning for a big wedding! So happy for the upcoming nuptials of Pap and Susan!

Pre-Summer
The spring has slipped by us which means that summer is upon us! There are 4 days of school left. I can't believe Cole is nearly finished with Kindergarten. Last Friday Cole's class performed a collection of patriotic songs. The Kindergarteners were adorable beyond words. Mrs. Sheaffer was choked up at the end and joked that all our children actually failed this year and would be repeating Kindergarten next year . A ploy to not give them up to the 1st grade :). Cole is super excited to move on to the first grade but not before we have a super fun summer. The pressure is on mom! I am hoping to have play dates galore, movies, pool time, and maybe a few secrets up my sleeves too! Brooks is anxiously awaiting his brother's return to our daily routine. His vocabulary continues to expand . My favorite words he has spoken lately are "because" and " I don't know", because they make me giggle coming from a 2 year old. He is as rambunctious as ever, tackling without notice and taking prisoners at every chance. Brooks is also my shopping companion and dress advisor :). As much as I love spending time with him, it will be nice to have Cole at home to keep him busy.

Six years
Cole, I don't know why your birthday is always a time to reflect and look back on the past year, but it always is. You've grown so much this year, physically and figuratively. You are smart, independent, sweet, caring, inquisitive, and so many more things. You are a better big brother than I ever could have imagined. You are a candy-a-holic! You love video games and watching DVD's of Scooby Doo, Tom and Jerry and Dr. Seuss stories. You are a picky eater but you love carrots dipped in ranch dressing and salad of all things. You read part of a Dr. Seuss story to me at bedtime tonight and although some told me you would be reading by the end of Kindergarten, I guess I never believed it. The experience brought tears to my eyes. My baby is reading. I think reading builds your confidence and writing is challenging for you. Those small motor skills in your fingers just won't cooperate. I wish you liked writing and drawing more, maybe then writing would get easier for you. Until then we'll keep writing in your journal.
Your birthday party this year was a Sunday celebration on your actual birthday filled with friends, some family, a moonbounce, all the candy a little boy could dream of and a 6 layer rainbow cake. I had a blast planning it for you and you are still talking about the best birthday party ever 2 weeks later. It's so easy to want to do these things for you because you are such a sweet little boy. Love you bunches!

March Madness
So Brooksy....wow you are getting big! I say that each and every time, but its true! You and I have had one heck of a winter with stomach bugs but you seem to take it all in stride and are the star getting me through the tough times right now. I love to hear you talk. I love having CONVERSATIONS with you! I love sitting with you at lunch. It's nearly as good as having lunch with a girlfriend! We ate at the Corner Bakery together this week and not only did we talk and eat together but we were having fun doing it. I wouldn't have traded it for the world. You proudly climbed the big kid play structure at the gym this week while I looked on and were so happy for me to see you do it. Your little personality is shining through in everything you do. This morning Cole and I had to wake you. You weren't surprised at all when we walked in, you jumped up in bed and surprised us! It is hard to describe how funny you are and how much you are just one more piece in our family's puzzle.
Cole is making amazing strides in Kindergarten. I am so proud of your READING abilities. I love to hear you read books, signs, magazines, anything out loud! Your class has also begun to tackle math and you have a natural talent with numbers. We are keeping a journal that we write in each night. I love to look at the progress you have made in a few short months. I am looking forward to spending next week with you...its Spring Break, and Brooks and I get to spend all day, every day with you. Even after three-quarters of the school year gone, we still miss you during the day and look forward to spending more time with you.

Forgotten February?

Spring has sprung?
Not really...but I can dream! Actually it has been a rather mild winter so far, with the high reaching 60 today. Even with the higher temps, we've had a low key month. I have been entertained with brooksie's ever increasing vocabulary and Coles amazing ability to read simple books. One of the highlights of my month is that Cole has finally decided to master nighttime potty training! It has taken a while but what a glorious triumph now that we are there! There have been so many blogtastic moments this month, I am saddened that I have been too lazy to write about them. On the same note, it has been a very somber, reflective month. One that for some reason leaves me very thankful for my family, my friends and for the life that I have. Nothing bad has happened to me per say, just things around me...joepa's passing, a friend of a friend's hubby dying from cancer, nanny having yet another heart procedure, learning that life can be unfair even to people we love so much. Why do bad things happen to good people?
Of Kie-Kies and Lovies: love at first nite-nite
I had a conversation with Cole this week about the blanket that he carried as a baby, the same one he still sleeps with today. we talked about where it came from and how it was his uncle Justin's when he was a little boy. Cole nodded his head and proudly announced that he didn't need kie kie to sleep with him at night anymore. Fast forward a few days to 230 am this morning when a very upset 5 year old enters our bedroom, crying that he cannot find kie kie. Make up your mind kiddo!
Both of my boys have had a comfort item. That thing that they just had to have to play, to eat, to sleep. I remember lugging around Cole's blanket when he was young and being a little disgruntled that everywhere we went kie-kie came too. Wasn't it enough that I had to carry a bag big enough to fit a small child filled with all the necessary items for a baby, 2 jackets, but also a blanket ta boot? We never lost kie-kie, I was too afraid of the consequences, but we left him in familiar places plenty. Thankfully he was always retrievable.
When Brooks became attached to a small piece of fabric also known as a burp cloth, that was okay with me. It was small and most of all replaceable if lost! It was easy to clean and of course, it gave him comfort. What is it about these things that seem to replace us parents at times? I know I am thankful for them. Not only do they provide peace in our house, at least when we can find them, but they are wonderful keepsakes for my boys.

Bring it on 2012!
Christmas was full of excitement this year. The kids could barely contain themselves on Christmas morning and Cole's expression was priceless when he finally figured out that the plain cardboard box actually held the DS that he had asked Santa for. He hasn't put it down since, unless you count watching someone else play it, a tactic to gain more Mario cart players or courses to play! Brooks is bouncing around from toy to toy and the Elmo Live thinga-ma-jig held his attention for a minute. Oh well...some things ya get right, others ya don't! Overall, it was a fabulous Christmas with family gathering at our house for a meal. Our food was yummy and plentiful and we had seating for just about everyone, which was awesome to me! The only things that could have made it even better is if Nanny had been with us too :) Round 2 of visitors and Christmas brought Grammie and Shane the day after Christmas. We had a lot of fun opening presents, watching U-tube videos together and playing skeeball at Chuck-E-Cheese! Its so fun to let go and be a kid sometimes. Dave, Amy and the kids came for a visit a little later in the week. We took all the kids to one of our favorite parks and we also went to the Air and Space Museum in Chantilly for the first time. Pretty neat stuff...but a very tired crew!
I'd say we had a pretty good Holiday season and an overall great year. I feel truly blessed to belong to such a wonderful family and to have such great friends in my life. The hardest part of the year was saying "good-bye" to my Big little man as he entered into Kindergarten. No longer was he all mine, I suddenly had to share him with others. Of course I know this is just the way things go, but I miss him just the same.
Happy New Year Everyone!

Cookies, Candy and Gingerbread...oh my!
The holidays are upon us and our annual gingerbread house decorating party was a success. Cole is anxiously awaiting Santa's arrival and is still excited about Jingle's location each morning. That little elf hides in the silliest places. Today he was perched above the table in the chandelier so that he could see all the decorating going on. It was wonderful to have friends and family together to do something fun and I hope it continues as a yearly tradition. Most of our daily activities lately have been in preparation for the holiday in some way. Shopping, cookie making and decorating are a few of the things we have been doing. I helped at cole's school last week during their gingerbread man making party. They are learning about gingerbread men at school and several variations on the story. They made big gingerbread men from paper and hung them in the halls at school. Each day a few sneak into the classroom! Such a cute idea.
Cole and brooks visited Santa on Friday and both were agreeable to getting their picture taken. Cole told Santa he wanted a DS for Christmas and Santa nodded in agreement. I sure hope he plans on getting him one because Cole was pretty sure that his nodding meant yes!

Countdown
I've been very busy lately of all things, making hair bows! My first ever craft fair was this past weekend and I am thankful for it to be over so that we can enjoy the entire holiday season. We made our countdown paper chain last week and Jingles, the elf, showed up. This weekend we decked the halls, both inside and out, and had lots of fun doing it. Brooks loved decorating the tree and loves the entire season. The big item on his wishlist this year is a Ds. We'll see if Santa brings one ;)

Happy Thanksgiving
It's been nearly a month since my last post and its not so much that I haven't had the time (or thought about) writing on the blog, I just plain ole' have been enjoying life with my boys. It is Thanksgiving Day and I am sitting in Grandma and Pap's living room, while the boys watch the Macy's Day Parade, A tradition that I cherish. Brooks exploded as the Sesame Street, Elmo specifically, float appeared on the screen and Cole was amazed at how the Rockettes could swing their legs in unison! It's the little things I am so thankful for this year. New words Brooks is speaking, Cole reading his first book (wow!), home improvements coming together to make our home truly OURS, and the not so little things too...amazing friends, a loving family, and all the blessings one could ever ask for. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
